What "Board-Certified Dermatologist" Means in Korea – and Why It Matters

In Korea, a board-certified dermatologist (피부과 전문의) is a medical doctor who completed a one-year internship and a four-year dermatology residency at a training hospital, then passed the national dermatology specialist examination. Any licensed doctor may legally perform skin procedures, so the specialist title is the clearest sign of formal training in skin disease, lasers and dermatologic surgery.

Why it matters for international patients

  • Accurate diagnosis. Pigmentation, redness and acne each have look-alike conditions. Treating melasma with the wrong laser settings, for example, can make it darker.
  • Safer device settings. Energy-based devices (lasers, radiofrequency, HIFU) can cause burns or pigment changes if settings do not match skin type and anatomy.
  • Injectable anatomy. Fillers and collagen stimulators require detailed knowledge of facial vessels and layers to reduce the risk of serious complications.
  • Managing complications. If something does not go as planned, a specialist can recognise and treat it promptly – important when you are about to fly home.

How to verify a dermatologist in Korea

  1. Check the clinic name. Under Korean medical law, a clinic can display "피부과의원" (dermatology clinic) as its specialty name only if it is run by a dermatology specialist. Clinics run by non-specialists typically use names like "○○의원" followed by "진료과목: 피부과".
  2. Look for "피부과 전문의" on the doctor's profile, certificate on the wall, or name badge.
  3. Ask where the doctor trained. Specialists can name the university hospital where they completed dermatology residency.
  4. Check society membership. Regular membership of the Korean Dermatological Association (대한피부과학회) is generally limited to dermatology specialists and residents.
  5. Ask who will perform your procedure. Make sure the specialist you consult is the one who performs or directly supervises the treatment.
